The Clean-up Crew

IMG_7957 2_edited.jpg

We have a small flock of sheep that we keep to help clean up the pastures after the goats have grazed through. Goats prefer browse and our dairy girls can sometimes be a bit picky with their grazing habits. During the fast growth of the spring and summer, we can't keep up with the vegetation in our pastures, so we rotate the dairy goats through first to pick and choose their favorites and then we bring the sheep in to graze down the vegetation to the appropriate height. At times we run our dry does with our sheep and they get along just great. Our wooly pals are a mixture of purebred Babydoll, and our favorites, Babydoll/Finn crosses. They are healthy, hardy, and efficient, and they require very little from us! We highly recommend sheep if you are looking for an animal to help manage pastures. They aren't as naughty as goats, nor do they test fences, and they don't mind being out in the rain. We still love our goats the most - I can't help it, I just love the personalities of Nigerian Dwarf goats, even if they are mischievous! Every once in a while we may have a lamb or two for sale if you're interested!
